Safe photo storage ideas?

I knocked my almost new 500gb external HD off the desk and lost thousands of photos. What’s the safest way to store those I recovered and future ones? I’d prefer not to use DVDs because it’s a pain looking for something and I’m not very organised. Is there a solid state external drive? would that be safer? or can you put a ssd into an enclosure? I only need about 100-150gb.
Perhaps I should just glue an external drive to the desk!!
If anyone has any solutions I’d be very grateful.

Get a second 500GB drive (or sell the 500 and get 2×250), and set up RAID 1 (mirrored drives) on them. RAID 1 writes identical data to two drives, therefore if one fails, the other one has all data preserved. You can then replace the failed drive, and repeat process.

maybe get 2 different usb drives or try to save them 0n a stick , even print them off and if you need them to be on your pc just scan them in,
and yer try a external drive very very usefull =D

First of all I am going to be honest and say that you should use your head about where you place your external HD, near the edge of a desk is just plain dumb. I keep my images on an external HD and every week or so I back up to DVD’s. It is not likely that I will need to resort to using the DVD’s, but it is handy to know they are there. Most of my images are shot on film so I have the luxury of having film negatives as back up, which will be around long after I’ve gone. If you do not want to back up to DVD because you are disorganized then pull your finger out and get sorting your catalogue, spend a day doing it and it will make your life a lot easier. Don’t forget that DVD’s are not guaranteed to keep your images safe forever, they can degrade over time. Once a year provide fresh copies just to be safe. Also consider online storage, it is not something I need to do but it may appeal to you.

Also seriously consider doing a copy of the DVDs, or buying another external HD, making yet another backup of everything and storing it at another location in case of fire.

    Western Digital Passport.
Small and flat, so its harder to knock over.
    Portable also.

    How about a file server?

I have a couple at home for storage purposes, including my multimedia works. I also have a back-up server just in case.

Find a specialist computer shop and you will find they can probably recover the stuff on the disc unless the disc itself is broken which is unlikely.

    In future.
    A. don’t put your drives in a place where you are going to spill, bang or knock them on the floor (think you know this now already)
    B. use two drives and duplicate your work.
