Answers for Storage

I don’t see the point of network attached storage?

the way it was explained to me NAS is a dumbed down computer for file sharing so that people don’t have to by an expensive server that’s really strong. but why not buy a really crappy computer and install a server on it? what’s the difference between NAS and a really crappy computer with Linux installed on it? I’m talking in a small office or home environment.

NAS are designed with things like twin GB network ports inbuilt and it is designed so that you can easy access your HDD and swap them around. Also most NAS are cheaper then other computers and can have more storage. Also NAS are designed to sit idle and be constantly on while most computers are not,

What are some handy things to have on my new computer?

I just got an ‘Enigma’ Intel core 17 computer for my birthday, with:

ASUS P6T WS Revo
Intel Core i7 Extreme 965 3.2GHz x 4 with HyperThreading 6.4GT/s FSB 8MB cache
12GB Triple-channel Corsair Dominator: 6 x 2048MB DDR3 1600MHz
Corsair Storage Solutions 256GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
LG Black BLU-RAY Writer 8X BD-R 16X DVD-R SATA Lightscribe Internal Drive
D-LINK DWA-556 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter 802.11 Draft N B/G 3X3 PCI-E1 Adapter
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition [64-bit]

So are there any cool things that I can download onto my computer like handy anti virus programs, or anti-hack software, or anything entertaining like google sketchpad or other fun things that a 13 year old boy might enjoy?
Thanks, oh and I already have iTunes, a computer game cheat engine and a Reflexive Arcade Hack.

AVG 9 Free Edition
Nero 9
Microsoft Office 2010 or the free alternative - OpenOffice.org
WinRAR 3.93
Adobe Photoshop CS4 or the free alternative - The GIMP
VirtualDub
Adobe Reader 9
DivX Player
VLC Media Player

There are lots of things you can download for free. Seach around on the internet, there’s bound to be something you find interesting. Just make sure once you download something to scan it for viruses. Don’t use Internet Explorer, by using it you have a higher chance of getting a virus so instead use Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera.

And also just out of curiosity, what graphics card do you have?

Hope I helped.

Where can I find a good external hard drive with automatic backup?

I need an external hard drive to back up my computer’s data, and am looking for one with a capacity around 500 gb. I’d like it to have automatic backup, so that it updates files every time I plug it in. The two I’ve found so far are an HP one and a ClickFree one, both shown below:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/storage_solutions/1/accessories/AU811AA%2523ABA

http://www.amazon.com/Clickfree-Automatic-Backup-Portable-External/dp/B001QFFBNO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Are these good prices? Which do you think is better? If you have other recommendations I’d be more than happy to hear them :)

Thank you so much in advance!

I’d go with the HP. just trust the brand more. As for price not too bad. However, check with Best Buy. You might be able to get the exact same hard drive for less.
Lot of times the company stores charge you full retail price where you can buy it for less at a store like Best Buy.

how to connect Network-attached storage (NAS) to the internet ?

My boss just got this new gadget that let u access the data from the hard dive of the NAS through internet however the only problem is that we are not able to figure out how to connect it to the internet through that standard process.
Any sort of help would be really appreciated………………..

Normally you plug it into a router and assign it a local address you can remember. You need a static IP from your ISP for this to work. Since you know your base IP, and the local address, you just go there from the internet when you want to.

You should either put a NoRobots.txt file at the root of the drive or if the NAS firmware supports it add a username/password challenge before access is granted.

If you don’t have a static IP, you will need to register a domain name so it can be found from the web. There are private services like NoIP dot com that allow you to register with them and then their server completes the connection after you log in with them.

Network attached storage (NAS)?

I was given a NAS system and put my old hard drive in it. However, I only have one computer, so I really have no need for NAS. It also takes a long time to transfer files from the NAS. My question is, can I change this NAS system into a regular external hard drive? Will it transfer faster?

Thanks

If you have a USB external hard drive then just connect it straight to the computer. If it’s an internal drive, you need to put it back inside the computer. You only need the NAS of you have more than one computer and need to access the hard drive from many different computers.

USB storage device not showing in My Computer?

Hi,

i connect external storage device through USB in my system , in the right side corner it says "Safely Remove Hardware" means usb is recognize by system BUT in "my computer" it is not showing under any drive like e: or f: like that. i search through google and refer many pages but they all end up with no solution, pls. help if someone know exact solution , i have win. XP.

Thanks in advance.
(system restart, plugin/plugout etc. steps already taken.)

Did you turn the hard drive on? Try unplugging the USB and plug it in again. If that doesn’t work, restart your computer with the usb unplugged and then plug it in.

Solid State Drive Question?

I accidentally deleted the earlier post…so:

"OK, I currently have an Intel 80Gb SSD installed and a boxed Intel 40Gb SSD ready for install. I am wonder if it would be wise to just put the OS on the 40Gb SSD and load programs on the 80Gb SSD. I already have 6Tb of storage space on external drives. I am NOT interested in RAID, so I am wondering if free up the OS disk might be a good idea?"

Thanks

It might, if you’re writing to the SSD. In that case, the more spare space you have, the longer your write speeds will stay high.

If you’re using the SSDs in the ideal way, for reading static system files and running programs, there won’t be any difference in which SSD you use for the OS.

Could you RAID a SATA hard drive with 16mb buffer with a SATA 32mb?

Will it increase or decrease performance?

When you RAID drives, they should have the exact same specifications. Especially, if you’re doing mirroring. The best way to do it is to buy multiple models of the exact same drive. Trust me.

Planning to Open Computer Showroom @ Khobar,Saudi Arabia?

I would like to know how’s the business market prevailing presently. In order to kick-off the business.

Customized desktop computer combined with value added services and its related products. The company offers a one stop solution in selling hardware, software; and other IT related products.

Hardware products include high end products such as customized desktop PC and servers. Other IT peripherals refer to printers, modems, webcam, CRT and LCD monitors, flash memory, portable data storage devices, networking accessories, input devices, UPS, add-on circuit boards and connectivity products.

choose your target clients : individuals or companies ??
for individuals you will need a shop, you can open next to everybody else, for companies you will need an office and a great contact list.
if you open next to everybody else, you will be offering the same and will only pick traffic from that area, if you want people to come to you, find another location where there are no other computer stores, with high traffic of people and open over there.
your prices will have to be competitive and you will have to offer stuff that makes you stand out, dont go looking for top end vey expensive stuff, this disqualifies you from the start

good luck
