Network Attached Storage (NAS) help?

I understand what a NAS (i.e. FreeNAS) does, however I still have some questions and uncertainties about it.

1. Is a NAS also an operating system?
Aside of the NAS, I want to use the same computer for other things. Just like Windows, I can connect an external Hard Drive and share it over my network. This drive will be separate from the NAS.

If I do decide not to do a NAS, what else can I do with an old computer?
Also, if you do not mind answering this to…

If the NAS is also an Operating System (OS) can I also set up a server on it (i.e. WampServer)? This too will be separate from the external hard drive idea.

Use Ubuntu Linux, (I would use the server version) and or MS Server 2003 or better.

If you go the Ubuntu method, do the basic install with LAMP server components then from the login prompt sudo apt-get install gnome or whatever one you want for a desktop.

You can mount and share your external drive on your LAN.

I also use webmin for web based administration. Here’s a link and how-to for webmin

can a "Buffalo LinkStation Live 500GB MultiMedia Network Attached Storage" Host servers of your games on BYOND?

Overall - can it host servers for games and other applications?
If Not - what is a good server i can buy

No, it’s a NAS, not a PC.

Edit: You’d need to buy a whole other PC to run the game servers you want.

How do I set up a home network drive?

My family wants to set up a storage devices over our Wireless-N network.

All the computers on the network have 802.11n wireless cards.
I was looking around on TigerDirect.ca and came up with a few options. Can you please tell me what will be the easiest to setup and use? Thanks!

P.S. The router I’m using is a D-Link DIR-615

Option 1: Iomega 33455 500GB Network Attached Storage (NAS)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3408591&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs

Option 2: LaCie Network Space 301387U NAS
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4300378&CatId=207

Option 3: D-Link DNS-321 Network Attached Storage Enclosure with TWO Hitachi Deskstarâ„¢ P7K500 250GB SATA HDD
http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=666

WITH

2x: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4142297&CatId=2458

I’m guessing for option 3 I’d have to put a file system on the hard drive, right?

We are a completely Mac household, all running 10.5+

Thanks in advance!
Um, thanks for you input?

Filesharing is all good and well, but it’s not what I’m looking for. Thanks for trying, though.

Hi,
Why you are investing money ??? the main purpose is to share file between computers …well its a very simple solution

You can share any thing between all computer ..You make one computer as a sharing hard disk ..by turning on file sharing feature on one computer hard disk ..you can choose any drive or even folder and some time single file ..User can read,,copy,,delete,,and save file..folders..and other stuff on that shared hard disk drive..folder..whatever you share.
Just after Turing on sharing make sure that your forward PORT 139 both UDP ..and TCP from your router setup page..by going to 192.168.1.1 in IE or may be your router have another IP to access setup ..

So how to turn it one just follow the simple file sharing step stated on the link below
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549

And other cool way to share file or even desktop etc is to install

its free and amazing :) ..Its work even behind routers

Best Network Backup Solution?

We’re considering a backup solution for our small business network, and we’re looking into many solutions (tape backup, external hard drives, Network Attached Storage). I’m leaning toward using NAS with a program such as Norton Ghost due to cost. Speed is not an issue, but reliability is. Any considerations as to why we should buy a $4500 tape backup with autoloader as opposed to, say, a couple of 500GB/1TB NAS drives which can be rotated offsite for about 1/5 the cost? We’ve just never had a backup solution here, and I’m new to all of this, and need advice. Thanks.

i think the best choise would be to use NAS plus good backup sollutions. as for me at home i use True Image Workstation, i adjusted group server and with it’s help i make scheduled backups of my 3 computers.

Accessing external HDD attached to wireless router…?

If I attached an external HDD to a NAS (Network attached storage) wireless router, e.g Belkin N etc…..

….Would I be able to access/configure it by MAP NETWORK DRIVE in My Computer, and for example access it as a "Z:\" drive on multiple computers?

Thanks

You can connect a external hard disk to the router but it does not offer full NAS functionality. You can access the files on the hard drive across the network but you need to have Belkin Storage Manager application installed on the network PCs. There are workarounds for this but novice users would certainly prefer the application. The drive is disconnected from the network if the application is closed on the host PC. FAT, FAT32 and NTFS are the supported partition formats. However, do not get surprised if your external USB drive does not work with the router as a few do not seem to work with it.
